In our many years of experience, we have often come across the following situation: during the initial design process, the need to transform logos and brand assets into their physical counterparts is often overlooked, as it comes at a later stage.
When this time comes, most brands are not open to the idea of redesigning brand assets from scratch just because the logo now needs to appear on a wall, facade, or reception desk. Sure, sometimes there is not going around a redesign, but more often the task is to translate digital assets into material form without weakening what already exists.
It sounds simple, but there are a few pitfalls. In this article, we’ll discuss common challenges and share our experience on how you can best overcome them.
1. What is the setting in which your design will be installed?
Here, it is important to understand how the environment affects your logo or 3D cut-out.
A logo on an indoor reception wall has a very different effect than the same logo on a shop window or an exterior facade. Light changes everything. So do viewing angle, distance, and placement.
So the question is not only whether the logo will be used indoors or outdoors. You should also consider questions such as:
Can the logo only be viewed from a greater distance?
This gives you more options when choosing the material, because the macrostructure will not be visible from far away. In this case element size for good readability becomes much more important.
Can the cut-out only be viewed from a sharp side angle, or is it clearly visible from the front?
In the first case, you should avoid choosing too much material depth in relation to the size of the letters or shapes. Otherwise, the design can visually merge into an unreadable block.
How will sunlight or a spotlight reflect from the viewer’s position?
In this case, it may be better to choose a matte or low-reflection material.
These are exactly the kinds of details that determine whether a material works with its surroundings or against them. Unfortunately, a static 2D mockup cannot give enough clarity as real-live settings are dynamic and varied.

2. What purpose should your 3D cut-out serve?
Not every physical 3D cut-out has the same function. Some are mainly meant to create presence. Others need to identify a space, mark an entrance, or help people find their way. Differentiating early is important to avoid choices that lead to less than ideal results.
A logo behind a reception desk can be more atmospheric or artistic. A logo on a door or as part of a wayfinding system cannot. When the purpose is to be read and understood quickly, contrast and minimalism come first. Not mood, and not an over-staged brand effect.
This is exactly where many teams become imprecise. They treat every physical implementation as a pure branding element, even when it is actually a functional object. That is how decorative typefaces end up on door signs, low-contrast logos appear where quick recognition would matter, and stylized logo versions suddenly get in the way of the actual function.
The solution is simple: brand presence and information should be thought of separately.
When the goal is emotional impact and brand presence, three-dimensionality can do a lot. Greater material depth, spacer mounting, and strong shadow effects can work very well. Use the variety of materials and their specific properties to express your brand in the best possible way.
When the focus is functionality and readability, the requirements shift. You need strong contrast, both in color and texture, less depth and shadow, as well as geometric clarity and simplicity. That means no handwriting fonts or overly decorative typefaces.
The mistake is believing that one single design approach has to work for every use case. It does not. A wall logo, a wordmark, and a text element in a wayfinding system can all belong to the same brand identity and still behave differently.
3. What is the ideal size for your application?
A 2D view of your design on a screen can look good, but it does not give you a real sense of scale in relation to your wall or surroundings. With our 3D Web2Cut configurator, we try to give you a better impression of the actual size and depth of your cut-out.
One of the most common questions our customers ask is: “How large should I scale my logo for a specific wall size?” There are many factors to consider here, such as the viewer’s perspective. A useful starting point is this rule of thumb: logo width = ⅖ × wall width.
Once the desired size of the design has been defined, the next steps to keep in mind are material thicknesses and mounting options. Thin letters usually need thinner material. If the material is too deep compared to the letter strokes, the logo can look too bulky instead of clean and balanced.
Fine lines can also become too thin, enclosed spaces can close up, and small details can lose clarity or stability.
It can also happen that a certain mounting option, such as spacers, is not suitable for the selected product size because the individual elements are too delicate.

4. How to translate screen effect into real form?
To make two-dimensional logo graphics used in print or on a website look more dynamic, designers often add effects such as gloss, gradients, shadows, 3D depth, or bevelled edges. What may look interesting digitally can quickly look cheap on a physical cut-out, because the effect can often only be reproduced as a superficial digital print.
A much better approach is to use the characteristic properties of the different materials. Instead of printing a fake 3D or shadow effect onto the surface, real material thickness should be used. If the goal is a premium glossy surface or even a metallic shine, materials such as polished acrylic glass or brushed stainless steel can achieve that effect much more convincingly.
That does not mean printed effects are always wrong. Some logos rely on gradients, color transitions, or translucent effects that are part of the brand identity. The important question is which elements truly need to be reproduced exactly, and which ones are better translated into physical form through material, thickness, light, reflection, or shadow.
5. What should be considered when it comes to colors?
Colors are complex — red is not just red. We understand that, and it is very important to us to reproduce logo colors or corporate colors as accurately as possible.
Depending on the colors in your design, different coloring methods are available depending on the product or material. With acrylic glass, for example, you can choose between solid-colored material, selected from the manufacturer’s color catalogue, lacquered material according to RAL, or printed material according to CMYK. Depending on the process, the available color range is therefore limited.
This means that choosing a very unusual color during the logo design process may limit your options later on. For example, a color gradient in the design can only be reproduced using digital printing.
When you select materials in the configurator that use different coloring methods or color systems, the system automatically converts the color to the closest possible equivalent. 6. How does the background surface affect your 3D logo?
Your cut-out is usually not displayed in isolation, but mounted on a wall or different surface. This is why it is important to make sure that both components work well together.
You should consider both the aesthetic appearance and the functional aspect. In most cases, both benefit from a strong contrast between the 3D design and the background.
This contrast can be created in two ways:
1. Color contrast
For example, black on a light background. This is especially important for functional applications such as wayfinding signage, where quick readability matters.
2. Structural contrast
Highly textured or reflective materials, such as Corten steel or polished metal, can look visually busy and usually work better on a plain, uniform background. The opposite is also true: on structured surfaces, such as acoustic panels, solid and even materials like matte hard foam or acrylic glass are usually the better choice.
Similar to web design, the physical representation of a logo can take on different colors and appearances depending on where and how it is used.
A good physical brand system takes into account that the colorful or visually complex logo version should not be used everywhere. Instead, it defines simpler, higher-contrast versions for applications where the logo needs to remain clear and easy to recognize.
7. Which material supports your brand identity?
As explained above, material has a strong visual character. That means it should support the feeling your brand is meant to create, not work against it.
Wood is a good example. It does not just add warmth. It also brings grain, color variation, and a more natural, less controlled appearance. For some brands, that is exactly the right choice. But it can also weaken a logo if the design depends on geometric precision or a clean, technical look.
Moss changes the effect even more. It softens edges, reduces precision, and shifts the logo more toward decoration. In the right interior, this can work very well. In the wrong context, however, it may no longer read as a clear logo, but more as a decorative wall element.
The same applies in the opposite direction. Some logos need sharp edges, strong contrast, and a more precise, solid presence. In these cases, metal or acrylic often preserve the geometry better than wood or moss. Metal usually adds precision, reflection, and durability. Acrylic works especially well when clear colors, clean contours, or a geometric look are important. Composite materials are useful when size, stability, or weight also play a role.
8. How do I choose the right mounting option, and how does it affect the appearance of my logo?
For most 3D cut-outs, you can choose between self-adhesive mounting and mounting with different types of spacers. Spacer mounting gives the logo or lettering a stronger sense of depth and creates more visible shadow. It also produces a subtle parallax effect when the viewer moves in front of the design.
However, the right mounting option is not only a visual decision. It also depends on the installation surface and what is technically possible during mounting. Scale and line width also matter. For example, very delicate letters may not be suitable for spacers because the individual elements do not provide the minimum width needed to attach them securely.

9. What regulations do you need to consider, especially for outdoor installations?
Beyond the look and effect you want to achieve with your 3D cut-out, outdoor installations may also be subject to local rules. These can vary depending on the city, region, building, and exact installation site.
This is especially relevant for logos, signs, and other elements that are visible from public space. In many cases, these are treated as outdoor advertising or signage, not just as decoration.
For example, in Berlin, certain advertising signs can be installed without a formal building permit procedure if they stay within defined size limits. The Berlin authorities currently state that signs with a visible area of up to 1 m² are generally procedure-free, and signs at the actual place of business are procedure-free up to 2.5 m².
However, “procedure-free” does not mean “anything goes.” Other rules may still apply, for example regarding traffic safety, the appearance of the building or streetscape, listed buildings, district-specific requirements, landlord approval, or facade restrictions. Berlin’s service portal also recommends contacting the responsible district building authority before submitting documents for signage that is not procedure-free.
So before planning an outdoor installation, check not only the material, size, and mounting method, but also whether the sign is legally allowed in that exact location.
10. Which file formats work best, and what should you keep in mind?
In general, our Web2Cut configurator is designed to give you as much freedom as possible when it comes to file formats and design content. This means you can also upload pixel-based files such as JPEG or PNG without hesitation, test them in the configurator, and calculate a price.
However, if you have one available, a vector file is usually the better choice before placing your order. Suitable formats include PDF, EPS, SVG, or Adobe Illustrator files.
Make sure your file contains only the actual design you want to produce, for example a logo, text, or freeform shape. It should not include dimensions, mock-ups with backgrounds, presentation layouts, or effects such as shadows.
You can also upload photos, such as portraits. This can work especially well for stencil designs, where image-based motifs can produce very strong results.
From digital identity to physical presence: why both should be designed together
Whether you are starting a new brand or going through a rebranding process, the focus today is almost always on the website or classic print media.
The physical implementation in real spaces is often considered much too late. Our advice: think about three-dimensionality from the very beginning.
If you consider the physical impact of your logo on facades, reception walls, or other real-world surfaces early in the process, you create a corporate identity that works convincingly in every environment, without compromise.
But even if you are already working with a finished design and want to translate it into the physical world for the first time, the wide range of materials offers countless strong possibilities.
