Corten is a type of weathering steel. Its alloying elements, including copper, chromium, nickel and, depending on the grade, phosphorus, form a dense protective patina on the surface. This slows further corrosion and gives Corten steel its distinctive weathered look.
Our Corten steel laser cut-outs are delivered with a pre-developed patina. Depending on the location, a dense, uniform rust patina will continue to develop over time. This process can take a few weeks to several months, and the final colour tone may vary slightly depending on air and weather conditions.
Avoid using Corten steel in areas where the material stays wet for long periods or comes into direct contact with wet materials. Salty environments, road salt, standing water, direct soil contact, and constant moisture can interfere with the formation of a stable protective patina.
A fully developed patina is more stable than ordinary rust, reducing loose rust particles (mill scale). However, weathering steel can still stain surrounding materials through rust-coloured runoff, especially when water flows onto porous surfaces such as stone, concrete, wood, mortar, or unglazed brick. Installation that are heavily exposed to running water or constant moisture should be avoided.

Apart from basic tools, everything needed for installation is included, along with clear instructions and free templates. Self-adhesive versions come with a free setting template, and the adhesive pads are already placed on the design at calculated points for optimal installation. Spacer-mounted versions include a free drilling template and pre-mounted fixings, so they can simply be clicked into place on site. The right mounting option depends mainly on the surface and the desired look.
